Hiking the Long Trail: 8 Days Away

Hiker Trash and the Trail Angel

8 days! 8 freaking days away!

I know I have been rather quiet on the subject, okay, I have been rather quiet in general, BUT we start our NOBO end to end thru-hike of the Long Trail in 8 days!

If you remember, way back in February, we hadn’t decided yet if we were going to hike northbound (NOBO) or southbound (SOBO). There are pros and cons to each. NOBO you can get your trail legs before tackling the harder terrain in the north, there are more people in the southern half since it is shared with the Appalachian Trail (AT) so you can gain confidence before entering the northern half with fewer people, and it is the traditional direction. SOBO you can get the hard stuff out of the way and cruise to the end, overlap with more hikers when you might be starting to wish for more interaction, and it’s the route that most people attempting an FKT, fastest known time, opt to travel. So what direction did we choose? NOBO!

My dad and stepmom are bringing us down to the start, thank you, Dad and Deb, early on the morning of September 4. We are hopping on the AT where it crosses Massachusettes Avenue in North Adams and starting our journey NOBO. Here’s the kicker though: we are hoping for a 13.5-mile day, but the first 3.5 miles don’t count towards the 273 miles of the Long Trail! Those 3.5 miles are just the approach trail, and it is approximately 1,660 feet of elevation gain. It’s going to be a doozy.

We did a 3 night journey on the AT back in July. I know, I know, I owe you all a post about that as well. It really allowed us to test out our gear, find what worked, what we needed to tweak, and we have since spent the time since then getting it done.

We did our grocery shopping, have our resupply boxes almost put together, and just need to pack our bags. It is getting super real and I would be a complete liar if I told you I wasn’t nervous. I am excited too though. So there’s that.

The countdown is on and I can’t wait to share it all with you.
